Preparatory Process


The WSIS Forum 2017 organizers invite all WSIS Stakeholders to continue to contribute to the Open Consultation Process, stakeholders are invited to make official submissions to the WSIS Secretariat on the Thematic Aspects and Innovations on the Format by 20 February 2017 and to participate in online dialogues on the WSIS Knowledge Communities. Further, stakeholders are invited to identity and nominate high-level track facilitators for the forum. Nominations should be made to wsis-info@itu.int by 20 November 2016.

WSIS Overall Review in December 2015 called for close alignment between the WSIS process and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, highlighting the cross-cutting contribution of ICTs to the Sustainable Development Goals. In this context also the WSIS Stocktaking evolves into the unique global process for collection of information on actions carried out in context of WSIS, while underlining their contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.


The WSIS Stocktaking database, currently with 8,000 plus entries and a growing community of 200,000 stakeholders, is a unique global tool for collecting information and regular reporting on ICT related initiatives and projects, carried out by governments, international organizations, the business sector, civil society, academia and other entities, in the context of 11 WSIS Action Lines.


Call for Update and New Entries


In support of the WSIS Implementation and Follow-up, all WSIS Stakeholders are invited to update and submit new entries online . Submitted activities will be reflected in the WSIS Stocktaking Report 2017, which will be released at the WSIS Forum 2017.

Regional WSIS Stocktaking Reports 2014-2016: ICT Projects and WSIS Action Line Related Activities

In addition to already published WSIS Stocktaking Report 2016 (global report) and the Regional WSIS Stocktaking Report: ICT Projects and WSIS Action Line Related Activities for Asia and Pacific Region (2014-2016), the Regional WSIS Stocktaking Report 2014-2016: ICT Projects and WSIS Action Line Related Activities for CIS Region is now also available online.


During the WSIS Forum 2016, while noting United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Resolution 2015/26, the WSIS multi-stakeholder community expressed the need for customized regional WSIS Stocktaking reports highlighting the efforts made towards implementation of the WSIS Action lines at the regional level.


The WSIS Stocktaking Regional Reports of ICT Projects and Activities for the Period 2014-2016 for Africa, the Americas, Arab States, Asia and Pacific, CIS, and Europe are being diligently prepared. Continuing the collection of projects reflecting the linkages between WSIS Action Lines and SDGs, the WSIS Stocktaking Regional Reports showcase the impact these projects have on the ground at the regional level.

Phase I: Submission phase—5 September 2016 – 15 February 2017

WSIS Prizes 2017 was launched in September 2017 and Phase I (the Submission Phase) opened the call for submissions to the contest of the WSIS Prizes 2017. During the period from 5 September 2016 until 15 February 2017, all stakeholders are invited to submit WSIS related projects to the contest for WSIS Prizes 2017. In order to process the submission, stakeholders are requested to complete the submission form for WSIS Prizes 2016 online that contains two parts: part one: executive summary (100 words) and part two: project information (1500-2000 words and 1 photo) .

The contest is open to all stakeholders, entities representing governments, private sector, international and regional institutions, civil society and academia. Each entity is allowed to submit one project per category. Stakeholders are invited to consult the rules for project submission and nomination criteria below prior to submitting a project.

GEM-TECH Awards


Finalists Announced for the GEM-TECH Awards


ITU and UN Women have announced the fourteen finalists shortlisted for the 2016 GEM-TECH Awards. The third annual GEM-TECH Awards received 311 nominations from 81 countries from a wide range of organizations that are working to empower women through innovative technologies and to promote women’s meaningful engagement with ICTs.
