The WSIS Stocktaking Process was launched in October 2004. Its aim is to provide a register of activities carried out by governments, international organizations, the business sector, civil society and other entities. To this end, in accordance with §120 of the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society adopted by the Summit, ITU has been maintaining the WSIS Stocktaking Database as a publicly accessible system providing information on ICT-related initiatives and projects with reference to the 11 WSIS Action Lines (Geneva Plan of Action). WSIS Stocktaking process provides the portal of best practices for stakeholders seeking for the updated information on the progress of implementation of WSIS outcomes. Regular WSIS Stocktaking reporting is a key tool for monitoring the progress. According to §120, WSIS Stocktaking is an important element of evaluation. ECOSOC Resolution 2012/5 on “Assessment of the progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society” encourages all WSIS stakeholders to continue to contribute information to the WSIS Stocktaking database.

Web 2.0 WSIS Stocktaking Platform was launched to share best practices and success stories in accordance with §28 e) Geneva, Plan of Action to “develop and launch website on best practices and success stories, based on compilation of contributions from all stakeholders” which is one of the tools to follow-up on the implementation of the objectives, goals and targets in the Plan of Action. Success stories is the publication that illustrates the key lessons learned from the management of ICT-related projects. Case studies are aimed at facilitating the transfer of knowledge, experience and models of project implementation.

WSIS Project Prizes is part of WSIS Stocktaking Process and it is a unique recognition for the excellence in the implementation of WSIS outcomes. This initiative is an immediate response to the requests expressed by WSIS Stakeholders during the WSIS Forum 2011 to create a mechanism to evaluate and rewards stakeholders for their efforts on the implementation of WSIS outcomes.
