Reporting on WSIS activities in Jordan
The National ICT Strategy 2007-2012 is currently under midterm review by MoICT to realign implementation efforts and address gaps in implementation. Efforts are currently underway to issue the National ICT Strategy 2012-2016. However, the 2007 NIS is aimed at increasing the sector’s competitiveness and productivity through different measures targeting four mutually-reinforcing and inter-related pillars that include: a) The Connectivity Pillar b) Trade and Investment c) Education d) Research and Development.
Infrastructure is essential in achieving the goal of digital inclusion. The project such as National Broadband Network (NBN) connects to date up to (633) public schools, (8) universities; (23) knowledge stations (KS), (127) government entities and (88) healthcare centers with a (100 Mbp/s) bandwidth capacity per site with the view to provide high-speed broadband access to increase universal access and universal coverage as well as contribute to the efficient and effective development of Jordan’s e-services delivery, quality and performance, particularly as they relate to Jordan’s education and healthcare systems. Future plans are being studied to utilize the network to support the business sector in Jordan and increase access in under-served areas to support the growth of traffic demand as the pace of technology diffusion accelerates.
The Establishment of The Regional Cable Network (RCN) will guarantee that every site along the cable path will always be accessible even if a network’s service is intermittent or interrupted. It will extend from the city of Fujairah (UAE) to Istanbul (Turkey) passing through Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Amman (Jordan) and Tartous (Syria) before entering the Turkish territory. From Istanbul this cable will be extended also to Europe, where 15 access points located along the Bulgarian and Greek borders with Turkey are already available. The communications cable will be the longest fully-r 11:37:31edundant terrestrial communications infrastructure in the Middle East, and will be capable of covering the entire Gulf region.
The JADI link will be connecting Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Amman (Jordan), Damascus (Syria) and Istanbul (Turkey). The 2, 530 Km cable is aimed to be an alternative to the underwater cables passing through the Red and Mediterranean Seas.
Capacity building and ICT literacy are crucial to build inclusive Information Society. The program E-government within the period between (2003-2010) has trained more than 13500 government employees on basic skills to use computers (ICDL, Cambridge, etc.), also on specialized training related on Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, technologies. In an effort to bridge the gap between the outcome of higher education institutions and the IT market labor needs, the ICT training academy is an umbrella that will include available programs offered by international training academies, universities, and local centers in an integrated network.

This is the time to scale up the developmental activities at large, and to come out from pilot syndrome, accept the proven model and scale it up to serve larger population in a sustainable manner.

Common Service Center Project is a project based on the out come of several such pilot, we now need to get united and put forward the thought of “Co-ordinating Synergies” at various levels in order to make CSC a grant sustainable Project, as the name itself suggests that it is a “Common Service Center”. We have to be loud and advocate various Govt. Deptt. to provide their services through this network, rather then starting from scratch again. The "Chicken and Egg" story end's here, the network is now sizable and maturing everyday. SCA's have taken first step - "The Egg is there Hatch the way you want", it is now on the Govt. department how they take advantage of this Technology Driven Network , it is proven tool for development, specially rural development as it provide knowledge and information connectivity which are the key's for socio-economic development.

The Rural communities through Common Service Centers are empowered with all 3A's i.e. awareness, accessibility and affordability At NICT, we have taken communities as our partner in Business by creating the "GRAM PRAGATI SAMOHA". This group of 3-4 men and women of village with our operator, work out the “Need Assessment”. At present, whole lot of services spectrum is available from education – Vocational Training, Banking to Insurance, Agro Input, Medical – Mobile Hospital, Knowledge products like news paper and Magazines, Telecom, Govt. services through MP Online, FMCG.

Our VLE's are trained and now they are maturing to take Lead Role as Local Hero's for "Change" /Development. The patronage of Govt. of M.P. specially Hon'ble Chief Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Minister of IT Mr. Kailash Vijyavergiya, IT Secretary Mr. Anurag Jain, OSD IT Mr. Anurag Shrivastav were always avilable 24X7 providing support and guidance. Our service provider organization are always eager to take first step in providing support for formulating New Business Model, training at grass root level, without which we would have not achieved what we have achieved today.

Forum: "Using ICT to enable Agricultural Innovation Systems for smallholders"

ICT can expand communication, cooperation, and ultimately innovation among the wide array of actors in agriculture. This forum builds on Module 6 of the "ICT in Agriculture Sourcebook", and it intends to explore how ICT can improve the concepts and operations discussed in the Agricultural Innovation Systems Sourcebook.

The discussion will explore:
• What ICT innovations are being used for farmers to access and exchange the information they need, and for service providers to provide information to farmers?
• What factors make ICT-based advisory services for smallholders sustainable?
• How does ICT facilitate knowledge generation, documentation, and sharing in support of farmers and of farmer innovations?
• What evidence exists of smallholders using and/or benefitting from ICT-based advisory services?

These issues as well as others and examples of successful projects will be discussed and brought together in a report used to inform GCARD 2012 and SOFA 2014. The e-Agriculture discussion is open to the participation of everyone.

A group of distinguished experts will join the discussion, including:
• Laura Drewett, ESOKO
